Winter Safety Tips For Your Dog

If you live in my Greater Cincinnati region, I don’t need to tell you we are just about on the verge of one of worst winter storms. Very quickly over the next few hours, outside wind chill temperatures will be dropping to minus 20 to 30 degrees or lower with snow and ice. We will be hunkering down for a few days. It is important to note winter dangers for dogs. I wanted to take time to share a few winter weather safety tips for your dog.

winter safety tips for your dogWith temperatures like this, frostbite can happen quickly. Keep your outdoor time to a minimum and avoid freezing pavement.

If you have a coat for your dog, this would be a time to put it on before heading out.

If you have paw wax, you can apply that to the bottom of your dog’s paws for protection. If you have Vaseline, you can use that also.

If you don’t already have them, it is too late to consider for this storm but may be something to consider for the future – doggie boots. Keep in mind that before you take your dog outside with the boots, you will more than likely need to invest time into working with your dog to be comfortable wearing them.

Keep in mind that salt and chemical de-icers is harmful to your pet if licked and can damage your dog’s paws. Moisture can increase the risk of frostbite so watch for ice and snow balls attached to your dog’s fur. When you come inside, wipe your dog’s paws (even put them in warm water first and then wipe them).

If you don’t already have it, it is too late for this storm but something to keep in mind for the future. Shoveling a path in the snow and covering it with straw can keep snow away from our dog’s sensitive paws.

While you are minimizing outdoor time, look for indoor fun you can have with your dog.
