Are You Helping Your Pet Succeed…Or Fail?

A dog training tip
Always ask yourself: In this moment, am I helping my pet to succeed or fail in my lesson? Remember, if your pet is not doing what you want it to do, it is more than likely not a matter of being stubborn or dumb.

 

Some things to consider if your lesson is not succeeding:


Are there too many other competing reinforcers that will make responding to you too difficult?Dog training tip - ask yourself if you are helping your dog succeed or fail
 
Are you using high enough value reinforcers?
 
Are you using accurate timing in marking/reinforcing the behavior you are teaching?
 
Have you broken the lesson done into small enough steps for your pet to learn?
 
Has your training session gone on too long?
 
Is your pet in any kind of pain?
 
Is your pet showing any signs of avoidance that could be a sign of not feeling safe or comfortable?
